Cawain from Paris, France

After sight seeing we walked down a street and came upon some street artists. By far this artist I felt was sooo awesome! He paints with acrylics on newspaper or magazine sheets allowing parts of the page to show through. I was a little worried as to the archival qualities of this but he assured me it was.
You really had to actually see these paintings in person to appreciate the broken up strokes that he used. I wanted to buy one but at 500 euros which translated to 800USD I wasn't prepared. I was so disappointed not to go home with one. I did e-mail the artist and asked him if he had a sight. If he gets back with me I'll let you know. Another fabulous find!

This is called "Carnaval" 43 x 58 Acrylique sur papier

  5. Dawn, I had your experience exactly -- twice! In 1998, I was walking around the Place du Terte, looking at the various artists' works, when suddenly I was arrested by Cawain's paintings. "Who IS this guy?" I thought. I bought a small portrait, and came home feeling it was the crown achievement of my visit to Paris.

In 2004 I was back again, and was drawn to the Place because of that earlier experience of unexpected pleasure. I really didn't expect him to still be there, and I didn't recognize him or his work (which had evolved) when I encountered them again -- once more, I was simply stopped in my tracks. Only after chatting with him a bit did I realize he was the same guy I'd seen 7 ears before. I still adored his stuff, and this time bought a larger piece. I tried to tell him in my halting French how much I admired his work, and he brought out a small booklet and made a gift of it to my husband and me. It was a multi-page program of one of his gallery showings, with numerous color plates of his paintings. I wasn't at all surprised to see that this man selling his work on the street was well known and highly respected in the art world.

BTW, upon returning home to the US, I looked him up on the web. At that time, there were a number of galleries that were selling his work online. Now you're right, he doesn't seem anywhere to be found. This is a heartbreak, because he's truly marvelous. If anyone knows what's become of him, I hope they'll let us all know.

  6. Doni,
I have had sooo many people contact me about finding this elusive artist. I fear he has dropped off the planet. If anyone finds him...please leave some information on this post.
Could you send me some of the galleries that represented him? Maybe I could contact them.
    Thank you!

  7. Sorry, Dawn, I didn't make a note of any gallery names. Who'd have thought he'd disappear like this?

    BTW, love your site!

  8. In October 2010 I was there on Montmartre. He wasn't there but a lovely woman artist who identified herself as his wife was and I bought a piece from her. And I plan to buy more next time I am there. What a find, and a stand-out among the rest. She also gave me a brochure from earlier gallery shows. I wrote tonthe email address she gave me, but did not get a reply.

  10. Cawain was in Monmartre over the weekend ... saw him visiting with his friend Mariano Yunta Lopesino. I only wish I had known then, who he was.
